Announced by HKIA's operator Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK), the introduction of the new security screening system will enhance the passenger experience and operational performance.
The security screening system will consist of the new smart security screening channels. Using the latest 3D and 360-degree CT-based X-ray scanning technology, the new system will allow passengers to keep electronic devices – including laptops and mobile phones – and liquids, aerosols, and gels in their carry-on luggage during the screening. The system – is also equipped with auto tray re-circulation, in-built tray sterilization, and an automatic alert to passengers for uncollected items on the tray.
Passengers who fail to clear the archway metal detector will have further screening in a new full-body scanner to replace the existing manual search that uses a hand-held detector. A simple outline of the person's body will be shown on the screen to protect passenger's privacy.
In a statement, Steven Yiu, Executive Director, Airport Operations of AAHK said: “The upgrades of the security screening system at HKIA not only further enhance the overall screening performance, but also make mandatory airport procedures more pleasant to passengers, with the existing aviation security standards and requirements remaining intact."
AAHK stated HKIA the new system will be put into service by phases from July. The full system – featuring 50 channels and 32 full-body scanners – will be installed and put into operation at HKIA Terminal 1 in phases. The first batch at the South and North Departures Immigration Halls at Terminal 1 will enter service on July 2.
